Discovering the Proverbs 31 Woman

It was November 2005 and it had been six months since I began my journey of inner transformation. It was a season in which my life was joyful and painful at the same time. I was shedding my old self and my new self was emerging, but the change took some getting used to. I had finally gotten to a point in my spiritual life where I felt like I was making some progress in understanding what God required of me and it was great for me.
One struggle I was having: how to embrace and perform my role as a woman, a spouse and a mother, and at the same time a Child of God. At the time I felt a bit overwhelmed wanting so badly to get it right. As I had learned from reading The Power of the Praying Woman, by Stormie Omartian, it was important to cover all the areas of my life with prayer, so I made this issue a prayer point.
My prayer was: “Lord, teach me to be the woman I need to be and help me to balance all the aspects of my life so that my life glorified you”.
What happened soon after was for me a miracle; for the first time I discovered Proverbs 31; and what did I find: TREASURE!!! This passage of Scripture was the answer to my uttered prayer and I was overjoyed.
The next step was putting all this knowledge into action, but I could not do it on my on. After all, my previous efforts to make lasting changes in my life were up to that point unsuccessful. I remembered that Jesus taught in the Scripture that the Holy Spirit is a Teacher and Helper:
But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.
St. John 14:26
I sought help from the Holy Spirit. The period of learning about virtue was not easy; what I came to understand was that being virtuous is not about being perfect. Instead, it was about allowing the perfect Holy Spirit of God to mold me into the woman I was created to be.
However challenging the journey seemed at times, I was comforted in knowing that I was not being judged for my weaknesses and ignorance; instead I was being nurtured and trained in godliness; one day at a time. And when I fell down, I was encouraged to get back up and keep pressing forward; after all the journey of faith is a lifetime process.
The woman in Proverbs 31 is a precious gift from God; His love for women is on full display through the Scripture. I believe that the Passage at Proverbs 31:10-31 is the answer to the prayers of a women who desire to please God. It’s about learning how to exude the essence of God, Who will be faithful to reward women for the spiritual fruits they bear.
The Woman in Proverb 31 is a friend; through her life, she teaches the art of living a life that pleases God. Surely, I found her to be a sister, a friend and confidante; though at first she seemed a bit intimidating, I soon learned that she was kind, gentle and patient.
As I invested time in studying the character of the Proverbs 31 Woman I learned that:
- Being Virtuous is not about being Perfect
- Developing Virtuous attributes is possible when we rely on God’s help
- God desires for women to be Virtuous
- Becoming a Virtuous Woman equips a woman for her Purpose
When you read Proverbs 31:10-31:
- What is your opinion of the woman described?
- What insights do you receive about what God requires of women?
- How do you desire to be like the Virtuous Woman?
The Virtuous Woman Project is inspired by Proverbs 31:10-31. I know that if women take the time to explore her character we will discover many secrets that will help us to live a victorious life; will your life be free of challenges? of course not, but definitely it will be possible to navigate.
